Hidden in the Minshan mountains on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau in northern Sichuan, Jiuzhaigou Valley is one of Asia's most breathtaking national parks. Named after the nine Tibetan villages scattered through the valley, the park is famous for its hyper-clear, mineral-rich turquoise and emerald lakes, multi-tiered waterfalls, and snow-dusted alpine forests.
The park features a Y-shaped layout spanning three main valleys: Shuzheng, Rize, and Zechawa. Eco-shuttle buses run continuously between prime attractions, including the roaring travertine cascade of Nuorilang Waterfall, the multi-colored Five Flower Lake, and the deep Long Lake. Wooden boardwalks parallel the road, allowing you to hike peaceful sections away from tour bus crowds.
With the opening of the high-speed rail line to Zhenjiangguan and Huanglongjiuzhaigou Station, transit from Chengdu now takes under two hours. Plan your trip in October for peak autumn foliage, dress in warm layers to handle morning mountain chills, and drink plenty of water to adjust to altitudes ranging from 2,000 to 3,100 meters.
