4 Days in Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong

Opening

Four days is the shortest itinerary that makes this combination work properly. Compress it further and either Huanglong becomes a rushed add-on or Jiuzhaigou gets cut to a single valley. This schedule gives each park its full day, builds in altitude acclimatization on arrival, and gets you back to Chengdu on Day 4 afternoon without an overnight rush.

The itinerary runs Chengdu → Zhangzha Town → two days in the parks → return Chengdu. No private vehicle required — high-speed rail, shuttle buses, and one private car for the Huanglong day cover all movement.

Itinerary at a Glance

Day 1: Chengdu to Zhangzha Town

Depart Chengdu East Station at 07:30–08:30.

The high-speed train to Huanglongjiuzhai Station takes approximately 1 hour 40 minutes. From the station, shuttle buses run directly to Zhangzha Town near the Jiuzhaigou south entrance — the ride takes about two hours. You arrive in Zhangzha Town around noon.

Do not enter the park today. Zhangzha Town sits at roughly 2,000 meters above sea level — about 1,900 meters higher than Chengdu. Most visitors feel fine on arrival, which is the problem: altitude effects often surface the morning after you push through them. Resting today means Day 2 starts with a clear head instead of a headache.

Spend the afternoon walking slowly around Zhangzha Town, picking up snacks and water for the next day, confirming your hotel has arranged a car for the Huanglong day, and eating dinner before 20:00. In bed by 21:00 — the Day 2 shuttle leaves at 07:30.

Accommodation: Book a hotel within 10 minutes' walk of the south entrance gate. In peak season, book three to four weeks ahead; for Golden Week dates, six weeks. Trip.com lists walking distance to the entrance in each property description — check this before confirming.

Day 2: Jiuzhaigou — Rize Valley

Leave the hotel at 07:15.

The first shuttle bus from the south entrance departs at 07:30. Board it. The ride to the upper Rize Valley takes about 45 minutes — you arrive at Five Flower Lake by approximately 08:30, before the midday crowd concentrates there.

Route: ride up, walk down.

From the top of Rize Valley, walk downhill through the main viewpoints:

1. Arrow Bamboo Lake — first stop walking down, quieter than the lower lakes
2. Panda Lake — wide open water, good reflections on clear mornings
3. Five Flower Lake ⭐ — the park's signature lake; the water grades from pale blue to deep green with submerged fallen logs visible below the surface. Stay as long as you want — this is the point of the trip. The right-side viewing platform gives the clearest angle across the full lake.
4. Pearl Shoal Waterfall — wide cascading falls accessible from a flat walkway, no steps required
5. Shuttle to Nuorilang Waterfall — roughly 270 meters wide, the park's largest waterfall; Nuorilang Service Center here is the main lunch stop
6. Optional: continue into Shuzheng Valley (Shuzheng Lakes cluster) if energy allows

Return to the south entrance by 16:30 — do not cut it close to the last shuttle.

Tonight: Eat dinner in Zhangzha Town, confirm the car pickup time for tomorrow with your hotel. The driver should collect you at 07:30–08:00 for Huanglong.

Day 3: Huanglong

Private car departs Zhangzha Town at 08:00.

Huanglong is roughly two hours by road from Zhangzha Town. Arrange the car through your hotel the evening before — front desk staff handle this routinely. Cost is approximately ¥200–400 each way per vehicle (not per person); sharing with other travelers cuts the cost.

You have spent one full night at 2,000 meters before going to Huanglong's 3,500–3,900 meters. This matters — the acclimatization from Day 1 and 2 makes the altitude difference easier to handle than arriving cold from Chengdu.

At Huanglong:

Arrive around 10:00. Buy tickets at the entrance (peak season ¥200; cable car ¥80 return). Take the cable car up — the trail from entrance to Five Colored Pool gains 400 meters of elevation; at this altitude, walking up consumes most of your energy before you reach the viewpoint.

After the cable car, walk approximately 20 minutes to Five Colored Pool (Wucai Chi) at 3,576 meters. The pools range from pale blue to deep green against yellow-orange travertine. Stay at the summit long enough to actually look at it rather than recover from the walk up.

Walk down through the mid-gorge pool clusters and Huanglong Temple — about 1.5 hours on foot.

Free oxygen is available at the park entrance. Use it if you feel unwell. Portable oxygen canisters (available at pharmacies in Zhangzha for around ¥30) are worth carrying in your pack.

Depart Huanglong around 15:30. Return to Zhangzha Town by 17:30–18:00. Dinner, early bed — Day 4 starts the same way as Day 2.

Day 4: Jiuzhaigou — Zechawa Valley, Then Chengdu

Leave the hotel at 07:15.

Board the 07:30 shuttle from the south entrance. Today's destination is Zechawa Valley — the higher, quieter section of the park that most visitors skip or rush on a single-day visit.

Route:

1. Shuttle to Long Lake (Chang Hai) — the highest lake in the park at 3,103 meters. The water runs deep blue; on clear days snowcapped peaks reflect in the surface. Visitors with heart or respiratory conditions should note this is the highest point in the standard circuit — take it slowly and skip it if Day 3 left you feeling altitude effects.
2. Shuttle to Five Colored Pool (Wucai Chi — this is the Jiuzhaigou park pool, entirely separate from Huanglong's Five Colored Pool of the same name)
3. Return to south entrance by 12:00–12:30

If you have time before the 07:30 shuttle: arrive at the south gate entrance five minutes early and check whether the park is already open. On Day 4, some visitors walk back to Five Flower Lake for 20 minutes before boarding the Zechawa shuttle. The morning light hits the lake differently on a second visit and the walkways are quieter than Day 2.

Afternoon: return to Chengdu.

Collect luggage from the hotel and board the shuttle bus back to Huanglongjiuzhai Station by 13:00–13:30. High-speed trains to Chengdu East run throughout the afternoon — a 15:00–16:00 departure gets you back to Chengdu by early evening. Book the return train before you leave Chengdu on Day 1.

Budget Reference

The wide range comes mainly from accommodation. Budget travelers in a guesthouse outside Golden Week fall toward ¥2,700; two people sharing a mid-range hotel during peak October fall toward the middle. The car cost splits between passengers — two people sharing brings it to ¥200–400 each way per person.

Before You Go

Book the Jiuzhaigou entrance ticket and hotel before leaving Chengdu — in peak season, good accommodation goes faster than tickets. Both are available on Trip.com with a foreign card; passport number required for tickets. Download an offline map (Maps.me or Amap) before entering the park, and carry ¥500–1,000 RMB cash as backup for park vendors and the Huanglong car.

Closing

The sequencing here is deliberate: rest on arrival, park on Day 2, higher altitude on Day 3 after one night's adjustment, then the quieter Zechawa section on Day 4 morning before heading home. Each day builds on the previous one rather than front-loading everything into the opening days.

If the trip is going well and you want a fifth day, spend it in Jiuzhaigou's Shuzheng Valley — the lower chain of lakes that most visitors see only briefly on the way back to the entrance.
