Staying in Zhangzha Town, five minutes' walk from the park gate, you can be among the first visitors on the shuttle buses at 07:30. Staying in Chengdu, 07:30 is when you leave the hotel — you won't reach the park until early afternoon. In peak autumn season, those five hours are the best light of the day at Five Flower Lake. That gap is what makes the accommodation choice matter here more than it does at most destinations.

Option 1: Zhangzha Town — The Right Answer for Most Visitors
Zhangzha Town is the settlement clustered around the park's south entrance gate. Hotels and guesthouses line both sides of the main road, with the ticket gate a five-to-ten-minute walk away. Options range from basic guesthouses to four-star hotels, and this is by far the most common base for visitors to the park.
Why this works:
The park's first shuttle buses depart at 07:30. Staying in Zhangzha means you can be on them. Five Flower Lake receives direct morning light in the two hours after the shuttles start running — the colors are sharper, the walkways are clear, and the viewing platform has breathing room. By 10:00 the crowds begin concentrating there. This isn't a concern exclusive to photographers; anyone who wants to actually see the lake colors rather than photograph them through a crowd of heads will feel the difference.
What to know:
Zhangzha is a small town built almost entirely around the park. Dining options are Tibetan-style restaurants and Sichuan basics — functional, limited, and more expensive than equivalent meals in Chengdu. There is no nightlife. Evenings are quiet. For many visitors this is fine; the park is the reason to be here.
Peak season (late September through October) accommodation fills fast. Book at least three to four weeks ahead; for Golden Week dates, six weeks is safer. On Trip.com, search "Zhangzha" or "Jiuzhaigou" and filter by proximity to the park entrance — some listings describe themselves as near the entrance but sit two or three kilometers away. Check the walking distance in the listing description before confirming.
Option 2: Songpan County — Only Makes Sense for the Combination Itinerary
Songpan is a small county town roughly between Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong Scenic Area. It sits about 1.5 hours by road from the Jiuzhaigou park entrance and around 30 minutes from Huanglong. Budget accommodation in Songpan runs ¥150–400 per night in peak season, noticeably cheaper than Zhangzha.
When it makes sense:
If the plan is Jiuzhaigou on day one and Huanglong on day two, Songpan sits roughly in the middle and cuts down the second-day drive. When it doesn't:
Every morning starts with a 1.5-hour drive before you reach the Jiuzhaigou entrance. That is 1.5 hours of morning light you won't see inside the park. If Jiuzhaigou is the main event, choosing Songpan to save money on accommodation is a trade that usually doesn't hold up once you're in it.

Option 3: Chengdu — Only in Specific Circumstances
Chengdu has better hotels, more dining options, and lower prices than anything near Jiuzhaigou. The case for staying there while visiting the park is real — but narrow.
The total travel time from central Chengdu to the park entrance runs roughly four hours each way. A day trip means eight hours in transit for however many hours you get inside. The math works on paper but tends to feel punishing once you're living it, particularly on the return leg after a full day of walking.
When Chengdu as a base makes sense:
Your itinerary has Jiuzhaigou as a single-day extension and the rest of the trip is anchored in the city. You have a fixed hotel in Chengdu already and the one-day visit is a late addition. You're genuinely not fussed about early morning access to the park.
When it doesn't:
You've allocated more than one day to Jiuzhaigou. You want to see the autumn foliage at its best. You've been told the park is "worth" a visit but haven't committed to actually spending time there — in that case, staying in Zhangzha makes the commitment real in a useful way.
Many visitors decide they can do Jiuzhaigou in a day from Chengdu, then spend the train home wishing they had stayed overnight. If you're on the fence, one night in Zhangzha is the right decision.
Practical Notes for Foreign Visitors
Passport at check-in: Chinese hotels are required by law to register foreign guests by passport. You do not need your passport number to make the reservation, but you must present the physical passport at check-in — a photo on your phone is not accepted. Keep it accessible on arrival day.
Language: Front desk staff at most Zhangzha hotels have limited English. Trip.com booking confirmation emails include the hotel address in Chinese — show this to your driver or taxi to find the property without needing to explain.
