Because Zhangjiajie's primary attractions are spread between Wulingyuan National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain, a three to four-day itinerary is necessary to explore both without exhaustion.
Day 1 focuses on the core Avatar landscapes in Wulingyuan: enter via the Forest Park ticket gate, take the Bailong Elevator up to the Yuanjiajie plateau, and hike past the "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" and the First Bridge Under Heaven. In the afternoon, catch an eco-bus across the plateau to Tianzi Mountain for panoramic vistas across thousands of jagged sandstone spires before descending via the Tianzi Mountain Cableway.
Day 2 takes you down into the river valleys: hike the shaded, peaceful 7.5-kilometer trail alongside the Golden Whip Stream (Jinbianxi), where crystal-clear mountain waters mirror towering sandstone cliffs. On Day 3, head to Zhangjiajie City to ride the world's longest cable car up Tianmen Mountain, walking along the sheer glass skywalks and descending the 999 steps of Heaven's Gate Cave.
