An optimal Xi'an itinerary divides time between the world-famous archaeological sites located outside the city and the vibrant cultural quarters preserved within the ancient city walls.
Day 1 is reserved for Emperor Qin's Terracotta Army: depart early by tour coach or private car to arrive when the museum opens, giving you uncrowded views into Pit 1, Pit 2, and the Bronze Chariots exhibition. In the afternoon, return to Xi'an to rent a bicycle atop the South Gate (Yongning Gate) and pedal the complete 14-kilometer loop around the ancient Ming City Wall, finishing with a dinner of steaming lamb soup and pita bread (yangrou paomo) in the Muslim Quarter.
Day 2 explores the Tang Dynasty legacy: visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the adjacent Shaanxi History Museum to inspect ancient gold and bronze treasures. In the evening, watch the musical fountain show on the North Square or visit the illuminated Tang Paradise garden. For a third day, take a day excursion to Mount Huashan to hike the thrilling cliff-side plank paths.
