Located just 25 minutes from Shanghai by bullet train, Suzhou can be experienced as an ambitious full-day excursion or, ideally, an overnight two-day stay that lets you enjoy peaceful early mornings along the canals.
Day 1: Arrive early at the Humble Administrator's Garden (Zhuozheng Yuan) at 7:30 AM to experience its reflection pavilions and stone bridges before tour crowds arrive. Directly adjacent, visit the stunning I.M. Pei-designed Suzhou Museum, followed by a late morning stroll along Pingjiang Road's stone canal paths. In the afternoon, visit the intimate Master of the Nets Garden and enjoy an evening Pingtan ballad performance in a traditional teahouse.
Day 2: Explore the quieter northwestern sector of the old city: tour the dramatic rockeries of the Lion Grove Garden (Shizi Lin), climb Tiger Hill to view the leaning Yunyan Pagoda, and take a sculling wooden boat ride along the Shantang Street canal as traditional red lanterns flicker to life at dusk.
