Perfect Beijing Itinerary: 3 to 5 Days of Imperial Landmarks & Hutongs

Carefully structured Beijing day-by-day itineraries. Maximize your time covering the Forbidden City, Great Wall hikes, Summer Palace, and hutong food walks.

Overview & Guide

Structuring a seamless itinerary in Beijing requires grouping sights by geographic sector to minimize cross-city transit on the capital's massive urban grid. Plan on dedicating at least four full days to balance imperial palaces with atmospheric neighborhood walks and a dedicated Great Wall expedition.

Begin Day 1 in the imperial core: walk through Tiananmen Square into the Forbidden City (Palace Museum) early in the morning, climb the pavilion at Jingshan Park for panoramic views over the golden palace roofs, and finish with an evening stroll through the Shichahai lakes and Gulou hutongs. Day 2 should be reserved entirely for hiking a pristine section of the Great Wall at Mutianyu or Jinshanling, returning in time for a celebratory Peking duck dinner.

On Day 3, travel northwest to explore the imperial lakes and marble bridges of the Summer Palace and the nearby Temple of Heaven in southern Beijing. For longer 5-day stays, incorporate the 798 Art District, the Lama Temple (Yonghegong), and the imperial Confucian Academy on Guozijian Street.
